The Urban Movie Channel is taking over the cable to digital world with it’s subscription based-streaming service. It’s not surprising this project was spearheaded by media mogul BET founder Bob Johnson. The Urban Movie Channel, offers a wide variety of exclusive content, comedy series, stage plays, Black films and never before seen footage of stars like “The Real” co-host Loni Love, Martin Lawrence and so much more. Exclusive interview (after the cut)

The Producer’s Channel  had the opportunity to ask comedian veteran, producer, host and Ambassador for UMC Doug Williams. Check out what he had to say:

I want to start by saying I thought your skit was very comical and with truth to it…I love a comedian that tells a story based on real talk…

PC:  What sparked your interest in becoming ambassador for the UMC Channel?

I was chosen by the network to be the ambassador of “Fall out Fridays.” Since they are going to be airing the 1st Amendment series, it seemed natural to let me promote the series and the whole comedy lineup. This is a great opportunity that the Urban Movie Channel has given me and I was honored to oblige.

PC:  How important do you feel this type of programming is for a) our people b) new filmmakers?

This is a historic occasion. As you know, Hollywood has a very limited amount of opportunities for minorities. This is evident by the small number of television shows and movies that are produced each year. Plus, there are only a handful of television shows and movies starring “us” right now.

Well, now we have a place that is specifically dedicated to serving the entertainment needs of our community. The Urban Movie Channel is the first and only digital streaming channel devoted to feature films, comedy specials, documentaries, music, and entertainment for urban audiences. It was create by Bob Johnson, founder of BET (Black Entertainment Television). So this is going to be big.

PC:  Veteran filmmakers and directors that have plenty of content they need to get distribution for?

UMC works with many African American film makers to continuously bring content to make the channel great. Hold on to your seat as more things roll out.

PC:  Are your jokes based on life experiences or purely for entertainment?

All my comedy comes from life experiences and relationships between males and females. We have been in existence since Adam and Eve. You would think by now someone would have figured this out. We are still no closer now to getting it right than we were back then.

Women have half the money and all the c****. This gives them an unfair advantage, lol.

PC:  Where are you from? Why comedy?

I’m from Montgomery, Alabama.

Why comedy? Because I couldn’t rap, lol. And believe me I have tried. At a time back in the late 80’s when everyone was socially conscious and “Public Enemy and “RUN DMC” were hot, people didn’t want to hear about big women eating fish and grits and wearing spandex. So comedy was my next option.

PC:  How will the UMC channel stand up against Netflix, Hulu and the likes? What will be the motivation besides the $2.99 and 14 day free trial?

This channel is an opportunity for underserved communities to have their films seen. This is a platform to showcase OUR works and introduce new talent. We are signed with STARZ and other filmmakers to continuously bring content. Did you know that we provide the content that you see on Netflix, Hulu and other channels? That comes from us!

Statement by PC:  I love how Netflix is getting acknowledgment for their shows… The Orange is the New Black actors were in line for awards with regular broadcast network actors of broadcasting TV Programming. That to me is rare.

PC:  How long do you think it will take UMC Channel to have original programming content that will garner the same type of attention as shows like OITNB?

Urban Movie Channel already has original content. We are excited about the future release of the well-received film, “Blackbird” starring Mo’Nique, Isiah Washington and Julian Walker.

  1. Will you be in any upcoming films or projects besides comedy that will be featured on UMC?

My wife and I have a production company called DNA Media Productions and we just completed a television series. Hopefully we can get it on the Urban Movie Channel. That’s one of the advantages of having a network like this. They can relate to projects that otherwise might not get any attention from other networks in Hollywood.

I want everyone to go to and check it out. We are offering a free 14 day trial and a low introductory monthly fee of $2.99 after that. Follow them on Twitter and Instagram @WatchUMC and Facebook @UrbanMovieChannel
