Straight Outta Compton’s highest ticket sales came “Straight Outta Atlanta,” in my own backyard “Atlantic Station.” S/O to 30363. Well if there was ever any doubt that Atlanta is the new “Hollywood South” all doubts should be removed. Not only is Atlanta taking over the film industry by storm in the world of making films (mainly due to the tax credit) ; it’s now making headline news for attracting people to the box office.
We know they say “black folks” don’t buy movie tickets but maybe the scene is the world is changing for urban films. Straight Outta Compton made statistic history when it did 60 million opening weekend and held the #1 Spot at the box office it’s 2nd weekend as well. Hitting the 100 million dollar mark the second week in the theaters, F.Gary Gray may be on his way to directing the top grossing film by a Black filmmaker in history! Wouldn’t that be a phenomenal defeat for a young black man who’s been certainly paying his dues in the world of film-making.
However, we must give credit where credit is due because word on the curb is Maurice “Moetown” Lee could have been partially responsible? How so? According to Creative Loafing:
Maurice “Moetown” Lee is in fact, the Atlanta resident & Compton native that may have played a huge role in Atlantic Station’s No. 1 ranking. As part of a huge social network of local transplants with Golden State ties, he used social media to push out the word to his Cali crew that Atlantic Station would be their go-to theater to view the film opening weekend.
“We actually sold out four shows at Atlantic station a week beforehand,” says Lee, noting Friday’s 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., 8:15 p.m., and 9 p.m. screenings as the showtimes they pre-ordered tickets for en masse. The West Up Down South database Lee is part of boasts roughly 3,800 active members and another 11,000 to 12,000 associated but less active members. He also helps organize and promote the Cali Picnic in Atlanta every year.
